Family writing night at Thornwell

Event focuses on several pathways

Parents and teachers joined forces at Thornwell School for the Arts on Jan. 23, for the PTO family writing night. Coordinating teacher Wanda Govan-Augustus gave parents different ways to support the language, cognitive and psychological pathways. One way to help children express feelings, Govan-Augustus said is by writing daily in journals provided by the school. She also encouraged parents tobrainstorm ideas with their children and to use open-ended questions to examine cause/effect, predictions, synthesis, application, analysis and evaluation.

Additional recommendations for parents included:

  • Using comfortable topics to engage discussion
  • Implementing sharing circles
  • Instituting special time with each child
  • Conducting listening skill activities
